Nostalgia Bay....Art for Today!

Heidi Hodges Visit Heidi's Photography Website!

Heidi has been active in photography most of her life. Since graduating from college with a degree in journalism, she has become a well-known photo-journalist for a local Door County newspaper. Her creativity has been recognized by the many photography and writing awards she has received over the past ten or more years. The technical side of photography, including traditional darkroom work is a particular area of expertise.

Here's what she has to say about her involvement in hand-tinting.

I picked up the art of hand-tinting in high school and then returned to it over a decade later when, as a photojournalist, I yearned for some longevity for my images. Hand-tinting turned fine images into fine art-art that was destined to stick around for awhile.Hand-tinting has given me some "quality time" with my photos. Working close with the details and dwelling on every nuance has made me a better artist and a better photojournalist. The images I choose to hand-tint are ones that I feel provoke peaceful feelings. They are warm, gentle and strongly composed. While photojournalism can capture calm moments, much of what is shot is hectic, tragic and sometimes painful. These hand-tinted picture s are the antithesis of my career-not so much as an escape, but rather a healthy addition.

Jacinda R. Tessmann

Jacinda has a degree in Marketing and over ten years experience in advertising, marketing and public relations. During her career she has received awards for copy writing, ad design and promotional ideas. She chose a career in advertising because it incorporated so many of the artistic aspects she was interested in: design, photography, creative writing, etc. She recently left the security of her full-time job in order to pursue her artistic interests on a full-time basis.

Here's what she has to say about her interest in hand-tinting.

I first became interested in photography as an art form while attending college, but it wasn't until I moved to Door County in 1989 that looking through a camera's lens became a way of life. To many, photography may seem more like a fixed science than an art form. But, to me, photography offers unlimited opportunity for creativity. A chance to tell a story, create a mood or entertain.

Hand-tinting offers me a chance for expression through color. Whether realistic, symbolic, contemporary, old fashioned or art deco, the possibilities are endless.
The themes fou nd in my photographs are as diverse as my interests in life. I've discovered that the choices I make in photography are a reflection of my true "self". With each individual choice I make, I learn more about the art form and about myself.
